Thailand leads all other countries in Southeast Asia in the drive to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Developments Goals, according to the Sustainable Development Report 2022 and the SDG Index 2022.
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are interlinked targets designed by the United Nations to be a “blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all,” according to the UN. The goals were approved by the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in 2015, with the aim of countries reaching them by 2030. Thailand also led all countries in Southeast Asia in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that preceded the SDGs and ended in 2015.
In the latest UN report on countries’ progress towards achieving the goals, Thailand scored 74.1 out of 100 to finish in 44th place out of 163. The Kingdom was just three places behind the U.S., which was ranked 41st with a score of 74.6.
Thailand was assessed as being on track to achieve the SDGS in poverty, education, clean water and sanitation, industry innovation and infrastructure, and responsible consumption and production. The Kingdom was also rated as moderately improving in good health and wellbeing, gender equality, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, and reduced inequalities.
The goal in which Thailand performed best was SDG1: poverty reduction. The Kingdom also scored well in SDG4: quality education, having achieved three of the four indicators, and four of five for SDG6: clean water and sanitation.
In Southeast Asia, Thailand was followed in second place by Viet Nam in (55th place), Singapore (60), Malaysia (72), Indonesia (82), Brunei (93), the Philippines (95), Myanmar (103), Cambodia (107) and Laos (111).
Finland, Denmark and Sweden were the top three countries in the index.
